Over the past few years, Robin Raaphorst’s portfolio has undergone a significant transformation in terms of its breadth, themes, and quality. A graduate of HKU Utrecht’s game art program, she has honed her skills in areas such as character design, concept art, and environmental art, contributing to various titles. However, the impact of AI on the industry has limited opportunities, prompting her to reconsider her career path.

„Instead, I have ventured into designing children’s book covers, creating murals, working on movie projects, and focusing on my personal projects,“ says Robin. „Currently, I am working on creature designs for a film and have a storyboard ready for another movie project. I’ve also delved into tattooing.“

Some of Robin’s most striking work is deeply personal. Growing up as the daughter of a Dutch father and Korean mother, she has always felt a sense of being different, not fully Dutch or Korean. Recently, she has started exploring her Asian heritage in her work, resulting in pieces with a Korean influence infused with her unique artistic approach.

„I draw mechas in Rotterdam, monster parades in Amsterdam, and dragons adorned in Delfts blue, along with smoking dragons and talking herons,“ she explains. „Working with tangible materials has shaped my style and identity as an artist, leading to different design choices that ultimately impact the final piece.“

With mood music playing in the background, Robin creates her larger pieces almost instinctively, guided by what feels right in the moment. Despite her evolving style, her inspiration remains rooted in the 90s manga and anime she has always cherished.

In her client work, Robin showcases a diverse range of looks, reflecting the versatility she developed during her time in the games industry. From brand illustrations for Stellar to concept art for a sci-fi horror film, her portfolio spans a wide spectrum of visual styles.

Collaborating with her father on projects adds a unique touch to her work, blending influences from both Eastern and Western traditions. As she continues to explore and refine her artistic voice, Robin aims to focus on pieces that reflect her combined heritage and push the boundaries of her creativity.
