The UN official in Gaza has warned that despite promised surge in humanitarian deliveries, the rebuilding process in the devastated Palestinian territory will „take an awful lot of time“. Sam Rose, acting director of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) in Gaza, emphasized the need to rebuild individuals, families, and communities in addition to infrastructure like food, healthcare, and buildings. Since the ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas, aid lorries have been entering Gaza with essential supplies like food, tents, and blankets that were previously stuck outside the territory. The ceasefire deal mandates a certain number of aid lorries to enter Gaza daily for the next six weeks, with hopes of addressing the urgent needs of the population. However, the process of rehabilitation and rebuilding is expected to be long and challenging. The World Health Organization is also working on a plan to restore Gaza’s health system and provide care for those with life-changing injuries. The humanitarian needs in Gaza are described as „staggering“ by UN officials, who have attributed the crisis to various factors including Israeli military restrictions on aid deliveries, hostilities, and breakdown of law and order. Israel has denied limiting aid deliveries and accused UN agencies of failing to distribute supplies effectively. The conflict in Gaza has resulted in significant casualties, destruction of infrastructure, and displacement of the population, with severe shortages of essential resources like food, fuel, and medicine. The situation is dire, with millions of people experiencing acute food insecurity and the risk of famine looming in some areas. Despite the challenges, humanitarian organizations like Unrwa are committed to providing assistance if given access, although they face potential bans imposed by Israel in the near future.
