BMW setzt auf eine Wasserstoffzukunft

BMW’s hydrogen plans are focused on introducing a hydrogen drive system as an available option starting in 2028, alongside their existing portfolio of vehicles. They see hydrogen-powered vehicles as complementary to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) rather than competition. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen concept car boasts 401 horsepower, under 6-second acceleration from zero-to-60 mph, and a 300-mile range.

In terms of hydrogen infrastructure, BMW is still working out where hydrogen-powered options will be offered. This decision will depend on factors such as the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure in each country and local levels of customer acceptance for hydrogen mobility. Currently, hydrogen filling stations for individual consumers are limited, with the majority located in California. However, BMW is exploring opportunities to expand hydrogen infrastructure in Europe, Japan, South Korea, and China.

Despite challenges in the consumer-facing hydrogen space, BMW remains optimistic about the future of hydrogen mobility. They believe that multiple emission-free drive solutions will be necessary to meet the personal mobility needs of customers worldwide. BMW’s partnership with Toyota, a leader in the hydrogen space with the Mirai, reflects their commitment to forward-looking technologies, including hydrogen.

In the hydrogen space, Honda is also making strides with the introduction of the CR-V e:FCEV for 2025. This vehicle combines plug-in battery technology with fuel cell technology, offering a range of 270 miles. The CR-V e:FCEV is currently only available in California. Hyundai Motor Group is also investing in hydrogen technology, unveiling plans to incorporate hydrogen technology into more of their product chains.

Overall, the future of hydrogen mobility looks promising, with automakers like BMW, Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai investing in hydrogen-powered vehicles and infrastructure. The shift towards hydrogen as an energy source could play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.
