Founded in 2007, Scribd is a digital library and subscription service that offers access to a diverse range of written and audio content. Over the past two decades, it has been a valuable resource for a wide range of users, from educators seeking classroom materials to professionals in need of business plans and outdoor enthusiasts looking for trail maps.
However, Scribd and its surrounding world have evolved since its inception, prompting a need for a corresponding evolution in its brand identity. The platform has recently divided into three distinct products: the Scribd digital document library, Everand, which focuses on ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and podcasts, and SlideShare, which concentrates on presentations.
Previously, the independent studio Mother Design successfully crafted the identity for Everand. Subsequently, they were tasked with developing a new identity for Scribd to enhance growth, modernize the platform, and create a brand that resonates with its goal of democratizing information.
In order to achieve this, the studio aimed to revamp the customer experience, making it more user-friendly and engaging while also emphasizing emotional benefits beyond just functionality, such as learning and empowerment.
The new visual identity positions Scribd as a contemporary content catalog, providing essential context to life’s ideas and positioning itself as a place for genuine understanding and personal growth. Inspired by physical archives and libraries, the brand world visualizes the evolution and synthesis of thoughts online, establishing Scribd as a source for exploration and connection.
The updated brand voice is confident and detail-oriented, encouraging users to explore, share knowledge, and nurture curiosity. The brand’s wordmark is framed in square brackets, referencing literary source lists and learning journeys, while a modified typeface incorporates bibliographic symbols to enhance headlines and convey a sense of understanding.
The refreshed color palette reflects the warmth and tangibility of a physical archive, creating a feeling of simplicity and optimism. Green, a consistent accent color, represents hope and growth, complemented by soft, earthy pastels throughout the user interface. This updated palette pays homage to Scribd’s original colors, symbolizing a connection to the brand’s roots.
