System Of A Down’s Daron Malakian has expressed his uncertainty about the possibility of a new album from the band, stating, „I’m not sure how much I want that anymore.“
The band’s last albums were released in 2005, titled ‚Mezmerize‘ and ‚Hypnotize‘. While there has been speculation about a new album in the works, frontman Serj Tankian had previously mentioned that a new System record would be a „fresh start in a brand new way.“
In a recent interview with Rick Rubin, Malakian discussed the potential of a new album from the band and revealed that he is not particularly enthusiastic about the idea. He mentioned that releasing an album now would feel disconnected from their previous work and wouldn’t continue the band’s story in a meaningful way.
Malakian acknowledged that he may have been interested in starting a new chapter with the band in the past, but his feelings have evolved over time. His bandmate, bassist Shavo Odadjian, also shared his thoughts on a new System album, emphasizing the need for it to be exceptional and living up to their previous accomplishments.
Tankian has reflected on his involvement in the last two albums, admitting that he had emotionally checked out during the recording process. While he still appreciates the music they created, he recognizes that it was a challenging period in his life.
Although the band has announced a series of tour dates, there is no concrete plan for a new album at this time. They are taking each step cautiously, focusing on their upcoming shows to gauge their compatibility and interest in returning to a regular touring schedule.
