Neu formuliert: „Banden verlangten $200 pro Nacht, um auf ihrem Gebiet zu drehen“: Walter Hill über die Entstehung des Kultfilms The Warriors | Film

Walter Hill, director

Initially, I doubted the feasibility of turning Sol Yurik’s 1965 novel, The Warriors, into a film due to logistical challenges and lack of star power. Despite turning down the project initially, fate led me back to it when the opportunity resurfaced.

Facing resistance and misunderstanding from Paramount, the studio viewed The Warriors as a sequel to Saturday Night Fever, failing to grasp its unique dystopian concept. However, audiences worldwide quickly connected with the film’s unconventional setting.

My idea of having Orson Welles narrate the introduction was dismissed by the studio, fearing it would hinder commercial success. Ultimately, the movie proved to be self-explanatory, contrary to my initial belief.

The decision to cast interracial gangs, despite initial studio reluctance, added a universal appeal to the film that resonated globally. The challenges faced while filming in New York’s gang territories, including bribes and logistical hurdles, added authenticity to the project.

The iconic scene with Luther clinking beer bottles and delivering the memorable line, „Warriors…come out to play,“ was a spontaneous moment that resonated with audiences. Despite controversies and violent incidents surrounding the film’s release, I stand by The Warriors as a proud achievement.

Deborah Van Valkenburgh, played Mercy

Upon reading the script, I was captivated by Mercy’s character and the cinematic journey it promised. Auditioning for the role, I aimed to embody her spirit despite initial skepticism from the director.

Finding a personal connection to Mercy’s independent and adventurous nature, I embraced the character’s essence and welcomed the challenges of filming, including a wrist injury on set.

The film’s reception and impact, including audience participation in recreating key moments like Luther’s call, were both exhilarating and overshadowed by unfortunate incidents of violence linked to the film.
