Dies sind schwarze Haare: Technologische Fortschritte machen Wellen in der Animation | Schwarze US-Kultur

For years, animations of afro-textured hair have been lacking behind those of straight hairstyles, failing to accurately depict the diverse styles and unique characteristics of Black hair. However, groundbreaking algorithms have now been developed by researchers to showcase coily Black hair in computer graphics, a significant advancement for the representation of Black characters.

The results of this study, a collaboration between Yale University and the University of California, Santa Cruz, have been published and will be accessible to animators worldwide. According to Theodore Kim, a co-author and professor at Yale School of Engineering and Applied Science, research papers are crucial for film studios to adopt new animation techniques, setting the agenda for future projects.

The creation of formulas to accurately render coily hair textures in computer graphics marks a historic moment, potentially enhancing inclusivity in animation. This development opens up possibilities for a wider range of representation, moving away from the limited styles that have been traditionally depicted.

Previously, animators had to manually adjust details to depict coily hair in computer graphics, resulting in inconsistencies. The new algorithms offer a standardized approach, providing animators with the tools to authentically portray afro-textured hair.

The research behind this study began with the Open Source Afro Hair Library (Osahl), founded in 2020 by co-author AM Darke. This initiative aimed to address the lack of representation in 3D asset marketplaces and create a community for Black artists to engage in discussions about their identity and representation.

By incorporating three major attributes of afro-textured hair – phase locking, period skipping, and switchback – the latest algorithms offer a more accurate portrayal of Black hair in computer graphics. This significant advancement challenges existing biases and prejudices within the industry, paving the way for more inclusive and authentic representation.
