Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Penguin, including the final episode.
The Penguin has concluded its run on Max/HBO (US), Sky/Now TV (UK), and Binge (Australia) after eight weeks of exceptional performances and a gripping storyline. The series has been described as an „epic Batman spin-off that deserves to sit alongside The Sopranos in HBO’s crime drama pantheon“.
As the dust settles on the explosive turf war between Oz Cobb and Sofia Falcone, viewers are left to ponder the aftermath. Who emerged as the new crime kingpin of Gotham City? Were there casualties in the final episode? And did the Caped Crusader make a surprise appearance? All these questions and more will be answered below, so if you haven’t watched episode 8 titled ‚Great or Little Thing‘, be warned that major spoilers lie ahead.
The Penguin ending explained: who won, Oz Cobb or Sofia Falcone?

Oz emerges victorious over Sofia in the battle for control of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Given that the show is called The Penguin, it’s no surprise that Oz prevails over his rival.
Despite appearing to be captured by Sofia’s henchmen and taken to Gotham City’s airport for a final meeting with her, Oz reveals that it was all part of his plan. With the help of his loyal gang members, Oz orchestrates a coup against Sofia and her associates, establishing himself as the new crime kingpin of Gotham.
Interestingly, Oz spares Sofia’s life, opting not to kill her as he typically would. Instead, he leaves her in the hands of the police, signaling a new chapter in Gotham’s criminal hierarchy.
The Penguin ending explained: wait, so Sofia isn’t dead?

No, Sofia is not killed but rather re-admitted to Arkham Asylum. Her past sins catch up with her as she faces the consequences of her actions.
In a twist of fate, Sofia finds herself back at the high-security facility where she spent a decade after being falsely accused by her father, Carmine Falcone. Despite her attempts to escape the asylum, Sofia’s past comes back to haunt her.
The Penguin ending explained: alright, so who did die?
Victor meets a tragic end (Image credit: Macall Polay/HBO)
Tragically, the most significant death in the series is that of Victor Aguilar, Oz’s loyal ally. Despite viewers‘ hopes that Victor might survive, he meets a grim fate at the hands of Oz himself.
As Oz solidifies his grip on Gotham’s criminal underworld, he decides to eliminate Victor to prevent any loose ends. In a heartbreaking scene, Oz suffocates Victor, leaving his body behind as he moves forward with his plans.
Additionally, Oz’s mother, Francis, is left in a vegetative state after suffering a stroke. Despite Oz’s efforts to care for her, their relationship takes a dark turn as Francis remains incapacitated.
The Penguin delivers a chilling conclusion that leaves viewers questioning the cost of power and the sacrifices made in pursuit of control.
Oz successfully fulfilled his pledge to always care for her and provide her with a good life. The Penguin ending explained: does Batman make a cameo? Bruce Wayne or his vigilante alter-ego does not make an appearance in The Penguin’s finale. The show’s creators have consistently stated that the Dark Knight would not show up, and they were true to their word. However, the Bat-Signal is seen in the distance, hinting at a potential connection to The Batman Part II. Other Batman-adjacent characters make appearances in the finale, such as Julian Rush and Mackenzie Bock. There is no mid-credits or post-credits scene in the final episode, and the possibility of a second season remains uncertain. The show’s success and critical acclaim may lead to future installments, but nothing is confirmed at this time. The Penguin’s events may influence The Batman Part II, but details about the sequel’s story remain unknown.
(Bildnachweis: Jonathan Olley/Warner Bros.)
