Ten years ago, architect Malcolm Wildeboer found the perfect spot for his client’s future house on a remote plot of land in Ontario, overlooking a tranquil lake surrounded by hemlocks. The client shared Wildeboer’s passion for the outdoors and they worked together to protect the trees on the roughly 20-acre property. Collaborating with Toronto-based design studio ACDO, they envisioned a materials-forward house inspired by traditional lodge retreats but with a contemporary twist, reflecting the bucolic setting.

The 10,000 square foot house features two wings, one public and one private, connected by a palette of concrete, soapstone, and oak. The living and dining area boasts 24-foot-high ceilings and a massive concrete fireplace, perfect for hosting dinner parties. Custom furniture and a unique jigsaw-patterned soapstone floor showcase the craftsmanship of the project.

The kitchen, with custom oak cabinetry and emerald quartzite accents, sits opposite the dining area and emphasizes color and texture throughout the space. Unique stone varieties are used in the bathrooms and office to create a bold visual impact. Each guest bedroom is designed with different configurations and palettes, reflecting the changing seasons of eastern Ontario.

The lower level of the home is dedicated to entertainment, featuring a cozy cinema and a walk-in wine-storage room. Stone elements throughout the space add texture and connect the interiors to nature, creating a harmonious blend of modern design and natural surroundings. „Du bekommst diese raue Oberfläche“, sagt Chan, „wie du sie in den Bergen finden würdest.“

Obwohl der Kunde und seine Familie nicht das ganze Jahr über in ihrem Waldrefugium wohnen, klassifizieren sie es nicht als Ferienhaus. „Unsere Herzen und Gedanken verlassen nie das Zuhause“, sagt er und stellt fest, dass die Schönheit, Funktionalität und Beziehung zur Umgebung perfekt ihren Wunsch erfüllen, das Anwesen mit denen zu teilen, die ihnen nahe stehen.
